Providing furniture and basic household necessities to clients after permanent housing is secured.

 

Often treated in an undignified manner and left feeling hopeless for years, the chronically homeless become outcasts in our community. Dignity and hope are reignited for Amarillo Housing First clients after receiving housing, and the transition from outcast to valued member of society begins with a home. The purpose of the AHF Furniture Closet Program is to promote physical and emotional comfort by providing household essentials to make a house into a home where individuals and families can begin healing and recovery.  After Amarillo Housing First clients have found permanent housing, it is essential to furnish the homes immediately with new or gently used furniture and appliances in good condition. This service is provided at no cost to clients and is made possible through donations, community sponsorships and volunteer support.

 

Furniture Packages for basic start-up include these items: bed, bedding, dresser, sofa, coffee table, television set, dining table and chairs, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. Appliances are typically included with the tenant lease, but occasionally washers, dryers, refrigerators and stoves must also be provided by AHF. Start-up furniture is provided primarily through generous private donations. Household Item Packages include: broom and dustpan, mop, sponges, vacuum, household cleaners, trash can, laundry basket and soap, dish drying racks, and bath and dish towels. Household item packages are typically purchased by AHF volunteers and staff at discount stores, buyout sales, and at reduced rates through partnership agreements for under $100. To minimize overhead and administrative costs and maximize effectiveness, the AHF Furniture Closet is a modest single storage unit conveniently located near downtown Amarillo and is managed by a team of volunteers who work diligently to inventory, sort, organize, receive and distribute donations of furniture and household items to meet client’s needs. With a  goal of 100 clients in housing this year, it takes a strong team of volunteers to meet the demand. Join our Team
